Using retinol in summer: what is allowed and what is not?

Retinols are outstanding ingredients in innovative skincare products. Regular use is important as they have versatile effects, and results can be seen quickly.

Vitamin A is a type of vitamin that is preferred in skincare products due to its protective and healing effects against skin issues, as well as its support for cell renewal. Retinol is one type of vitamin A. The high content of retinol raises several conditions that need to be considered during its use. One such situation is whether  the use of retinol in summer  is appropriate. Retinols that provide intense sun protection can increase skin sensitivity. However, if used correctly and protection is maintained after use, it can be said that there is no harm in continuing to use retinol in the summer.

Considerations when using retinol

Retinols have several roles in skincare. These roles include, for example: reducing the appearance of wrinkles by increasing collagen structure, protecting the skin from a porous appearance, preventing the formation of acne, and reducing the appearance of spots. Experts recommend appropriate protection after use. It has been observed that with proper use, the skin appears more vibrant and the skin barrier is strengthened.

Experts suggest using retinol primarily at night. In this sense, sun protection after retinol becomes even more important. One of the first questions that arises is whether retinol can be used in the summer. Since the effect of sunlight on the skin increases in the summer, if we prefer retinol in the summer, sun protection after retinol becomes even more crucial.

For the first time, gradual use is recommended. Once we feel that our skin has adapted, the frequency of use can be increased by observing the changes in the skin.

The interaction of the sun and retinol

Retinol and sun sensitivity can be considered an incompatible pair. Due to the skin-renewing properties of retinol, it should not be forgotten that the skin becomes more sensitive during its use. As the sun's UV effects intensify during the summer months, the use of retinol in summer requires increased attention and care. The fact that retinol is also a light-sensitive ingredient may raise concerns in this regard. The use of active ingredients in summer skincare is not specifically recommended.

In addition to nighttime retinol use, it is advisable to pay increased attention to sun protection, especially during summer retinol use. The use of products with SPF protection should be given greater emphasis in daily life. These treatments are expected to effectively reduce the skin's potential sensitivity during the process.

Adjusting the amount of retinol in summer

Setting the dosage of retinol during summer use is an important consideration for protecting skin health. Therefore, it is essential to monitor the frequency and dosage of retinol use during the summer months. For those with sensitive skin, it is recommended to use the product under expert supervision. The suggested application method is to gradually increase the dosage according to the skin's reactions. This is also very important when using active ingredients in summer.

Sun protection strategies when using retinol

When applying retinol, it is crucial to make the use of sunscreen products a habit throughout the process. High SPF sunscreens provide protection against the negative effects of retinol and sun sensitivity. For those using retinol in the summer it is recommended to renew the use of sunscreen throughout the day. Additionally, to reduce skin sensitivity, the use of protective products such as hats and sunglasses is also advised.

Dryness and sensitivity on the skin with retinol

During the use of retinol, side effects such as dryness, peeling, and sensitivity can be observed. The summer use of retinol increases the likelihood of these effects. Therefore, it is advisable to increase the use of moisturizing products in the skincare routine during this process.

In case of such skin side effects, it is recommended to reduce the frequency of retinol use or even temporarily discontinue its use. For those who prefer this method, it is advisable to take extra care of the skin to strengthen the skin barrier function, thereby reducing skin sensitivity .

Alternative Active Activities and Summer Routines

Those who wish to take a break from using retinol during the summer can choose products with alternative active ingredients. If retinol is too harsh on the skin, or if it is a time when there is intense sun exposure, such products can be used. Products containing vitamin C may also be considered as an alternative active ingredient due to their skin-brightening and antioxidant properties.

As a result, the summer use of retinol can be considered beneficial when we ensure safety with the right applications. Although intensive use of the product is not recommended during this time, it is advisable to maintain intense hydration and reduce sun exposure. Protecting the health of the skin is of utmost importance when using products with strong active ingredients like retinol.

So if we pay careful attention to sun protection, we can safely use retinol in moderation during the summer as well.
