Why is it important to use sunscreen around the eyes?

Caring for the eye area often takes a back seat, yet it is one of our most sensitive areas.

Just think about it: the skin around the eyes is thin, constantly moving (blinking, facial expressions), and signs of aging become visible almost immediately. That’s why it is very important to use sunscreen not only on your face but also around your eyes!

UV rays not only cause wrinkles and pigmentation spots but also break down the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. This becomes apparent more quickly on the delicate skin under the eyes: in the form of wrinkles, dark circles, and even skin thinning. However, specially developed sunscreens for the eye area help maintain skin health, reduce irritation, and contribute to a more youthful appearance. Moreover, it is worth using them all year round, not just in the summer!

Why is the eye area so sensitive?

  • The skin around the eyes is only about 0.5 mm thick – meaning it is very thin.

  • There are few sebaceous glands present, so it loses moisture more quickly.

  • It is constantly "working": we blink, we laugh, we squint – this is why fine lines and wrinkles form more easily.

  • External factors (sun, wind, air pollution) have a particularly strong effect on it.

It is no coincidence that dark circles, puffiness, and fine wrinkles often appear in this area. Therefore, it is worth choosing an alcohol-free and fragrance-free gentle sunscreen that is kind to the skin.

Sun exposure and dark circles under the eyes

Many people think that dark circles are only caused by lack of sleep or stress. However, sunlight also plays a significant role! UV rays increase melanin production, which can cause pigmentation spots and circles under the eyes. Additionally, they thin the skin, making the veins more visible and enhancing the tired appearance.

The prevention is simple:

  • use sunscreen around the eyes,

  • wear sunglasses,

  • protect your face in the shade or with a hat.

What to pay attention to?

  • it should be gentle, non-irritating,

  • should contain nourishing ingredients (e.g., vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants),

  • available in waterproof, makeup-friendly formulas,

  • there are also alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and oil-free versions for sensitive skin.

This way, they not only protect but also care for the delicate skin around the eyes.

How to use it correctly?

  1. Choose a mineral-based, fragrance-free sunscreen.

  2. Dispense a pea-sized amount and gently tap it into the skin under the eye, under the eyebrow, and around the outer corner of the eye.

  3. Do not rub, as this will unnecessarily pull the skin.

  4. Be careful not to get it in your eyes.

  5. If you sweat or wash your face, reapply during the day.

Which one to choose?

  • Maruderm SPF50+ 100% Mineral Sunscreen Cream: works with mineral filters, making it gentler for sensitive skin. A good choice if you are looking for a sunscreen that provides high protection against sunlight, UVA/UVB effects, and minimizes the chance of irritation.

  • Maruderm SPF 50+ Anti-Blemish Sunscreen Cream: this is especially useful if you are prone to pigmentation spots.Alpha arbutin content can help reduce existing spots while providing sun protection.

  • Maruderm SPF50+ Pink Tone Up Sunscreen Cream: due to its tinted formula, it also acts as a concealer, providing an instant "boost" for radiance and a more even skin tone – if you don't like white marks or a heavy sunscreen layer.

  • Maruderm SPF 50+ Moisturizing Sunscreen Cream: if the area around your eyes is prone to dryness, this moisturizing sunscreen cream offers a lot of extra benefits. Ceramides/hyaluronic acid (or similar moisturizing ingredients) help prevent the skin from feeling tight and irritated.

  • Maruderm SPF 50+ Vitamin C Sunscreen Cream: due to the antioxidant effect of vitamin C, it provides additional protection against free radicals, which can also help reduce the appearance of pigmentation spots and signs of aging.
